How to change your driving test date
There are two ways to move a DVSA practical test, and only one of them costs anything. Start with the free one.
1. Change it yourself through DVSA
For most people this is the whole answer. Sign in to the DVSA booking service on GOV.UK with your driving licence number and your test booking reference, or ring DVSA on 0300 200 1122. If an earlier slot is free at a centre you can get to, move your test to it and you are finished.
DVSA asks for a minimum amount of notice to change a test without losing the fee. That period is set by DVSA and does change, so check the current one on GOV.UK rather than taking a number off a page like this one.
Nobody may do this for you. Since 12 May 2026 it has been against the law for anyone other than the candidate to book, change, cancel or swap a DVSA practical driving test — instructors, parents and paid services included. That rule is why the cancellation-finding services closed or changed what they sell.
2. If nothing earlier is free, swap with another learner
The booking system only shows you what nobody is holding. Most earlier dates are not free — they are booked, by learners who would rather have a later one. A swap is two people who each want the other's date agreeing to trade, and then each of them making their own change with DVSA.
- Both of you must already hold a valid car test booking, with a change left on it.
- The tests must be at the same centre, one of the three nearest to it, or the centre you first booked at.
- The request has to be at least 10 full working days before the earlier of the two dates.
- Both of you have to be available on the call — DVSA confirms consent from each side.
- Each of you rings DVSA on 0300 200 1122 and makes your own change. Nobody acts on anybody else's booking, so nothing in the 2026 rules is broken.
That is the part Zwitch does: it finds the learner whose date you want and who wants yours, and then steps out of the way. Listing your test and being matched is free; Zwitch charges only once a swap is agreed, and it never touches your booking.
Which route is right for you
Change it yourself if…
- An earlier slot is already showing at a centre you can use.
- You only need to move to a later date.
- You are cancelling rather than moving.
Look for a swap if…
- Nothing earlier is free and the wait where you are is long.
- You are happy to keep the same centre, or one of the three nearest.
- Your test is more than 10 full working days away.
Waits differ enormously by centre — the median across the 311 centres published here is 11.9 weeks. You can check the wait at your own centre before deciding.
Common questions
- How do I change my driving test date?
- Change it yourself through the DVSA booking service on GOV.UK, or by ringing DVSA on 0300 200 1122. You need your driving licence number and your test booking reference. Nobody else may do it for you: since 12 May 2026 it has been against the law for anyone other than the candidate to book, change, cancel or swap a DVSA practical test.
- Can I move my driving test to an earlier date?
- Only if an earlier slot is free at a centre you can use. If nothing earlier is showing, the other route is to swap with a learner who holds a date you want and wants yours. You agree the trade between you, then each of you rings DVSA separately to make your own change.
- Can someone change my driving test for me?
- No. Since 12 May 2026 only the candidate may book, change, cancel or swap their own test. That covers instructors, family and any paid service. Zwitch does not touch your booking either — it introduces you to the other learner and stops there.
- What are the rules for swapping a driving test with another learner?
- Both of you must already hold a valid car test booking with a change left on it. The tests must be at the same centre, one of the three nearest to it, or the centre you first booked at. The request has to be at least 10 full working days before the earlier of the two dates, and both of you have to be available on the call, because DVSA confirms consent from each side.
- Does it cost anything to swap a driving test?
- Listing your test on Zwitch and being matched is free. Zwitch charges only once a swap is agreed. The change itself is made by you with DVSA, and DVSA does not charge to move a test as long as you give the notice they require.
- How long is the wait for a driving test?
- Across the 311 centres published on this site the median wait is 11.9 weeks, taken from DVSA's own monthly figures. It varies a lot by centre, which is why a swap is often faster than waiting for a cancellation.
