The rule that ended cancellation hunting
Since 12 May 2026 it has been against the law for anyone other than the candidate to book, change, cancel or swap a DVSA practical driving test. That covers instructors, family members and the paid services that used to watch the booking system and grab a slot the moment one appeared.
Cancelled tests still go back into the system, and you are still free to refresh it yourself. What is gone is paying somebody to do it for you.
How to get an earlier driving test now
You swap driving test dates with another learner. Two people who each want the other's date agree to trade, and then each of them rings DVSA on 0300 200 1122 to make their own change. Nobody acts on anybody else's booking, so nothing in the new rules is broken.
- Both of you must already hold a valid car test booking, with a change left on it.
- The tests must be at the same centre, one of the three nearest to it, or the centre you first booked at.
- The request has to be at least 10 full working days before the earlier of the two dates.
- Both of you have to be available on the call — DVSA confirms consent from each side.
